Why Beyond the BSc?

MY STORY

About Me
IMG_8038_edited.jpg

My name is Dr. Amanda Mohabeer and I am a 2021 graduate from the University of Toronto, completing my PhD in Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology. I also completed the Adult Learning & Development Certificate from OISE in 2024.

My passion for students, professional development, and higher education began towards the end of grad school, after I spent years mentoring students in the lab. I always appreciated seeing their progress and supporting their growth.

My experiences include working as an undergraduate supervisor, mentor, teaching assistant, course instructor, pedagogical research assistant and academic consultant. I also held roles in research administration, writing and editing award applications. I now work as a Program Manager where my portfolio includes creating professional development programming for postdoctoral fellows.

Addressing the Need

As I progressed through graduate school and into various student facing roles, I realized that many STEM undergraduates and new grads do not always have access to sufficient information about establishing goals or career planning.

Back in October 2020, while in the midst of the pandemic and writing up my thesis, I hosted a five-part online workshop series for 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students in my home department. These covered research and professional-based graduate programs, applying for work, and ended with a career panel. Now, I have adapted the content into a series of blog posts for open access. I also offer a range of services for personalized and tailored support.

WHAT CLIENTS ARE SAYING

"While working with Dr. Mohabeer I was continually impressed by her leadership qualities, professionalism, enthusiasm to teach as well as her dedication to her work. Throughout my degree I considered Dr. Mohabeer a mentor whose guidance and supervision were invaluable to my graduate training. As a senior student in our lab she was typically the first person I would seek out help from. Dr. Mohabeer prioritized my success and took time to teach me experimental techniques and helped develop my critical thinking skills in learning to analyze and interpret data." C.H. (former graduate student)

"Ms. Mohabeer has contributed immensely to my growth as a student and I am pleased to write this recommendation. At the beginning of the work-study, Ms. Mohabeer immediately established a strong rapport with me through her open communication and positive attitude. She assisted me through the initial phases, taking the time to provide instructional support for all laboratory procedures and relevant experiments. This enthusiasm for learning and teaching came with extreme organization, dedication and positive attitude." M.N. (former undergraduate student)

"Amanda taught me how to read and critique primary research papers, how to formulate a rationale and a hypothesis, and how to go about analyzing data and making conclusions. When it came time for presentations, Amanda constantly practiced with me and prepared me for possible questions. This way I was prepared and confident for the day of my presentation. I have learned so much from her, not only about research and lab but also about how to be a teacher and mentor myself. She inspired me to apply for research based graduate studies and become a mentor for undergraduate students as well. Even after my thesis project, I continue to turn to Amanda for her guidance and mentorship. N.K. (former undergraduate student)
